Before getting too concerned, try a quick test. Plug a small lamp into the outlet and flip all the wall switches in the room. Sometimes outlets are controlled by a switch, and the lamp might turn on. If no switch operates the outlet, check if other outlets or lights in the room are also out. Then, look at the electrical panel to see if any circuits are tripped and reset the circuit breaker if needed. If the outlet still doesn’t work after trying these steps, give us a call to assess the issue
To reset a tripped breaker, first, ensure that you have resolved the issue that caused the trip, such as unplugging overloaded appliances or fixing short circuits. Then, find your circuit breaker panel, locate the tripped breaker (usually in the “off” position or in a middle position between “on” and “off”).
Switch it fully to the “off” position and then back to the “on” position. This should reset the breaker and restore power to the circuit. If it trips again immediately, you may have an unresolved electrical issue that needs professional attention.
Avoid tackling electrical repairs as a DIY project. Some tasks may need permits, and there's always a risk of electric shock or fire when dealing with wiring. Plus, trying to fix things yourself could lead to even bigger problems and expensive repairs. To stay safe and save money, it's best to hire a professional electrician for any home electrical work.
Tamper-resistant receptacles have small sliding doors that cover the openings, preventing children from sticking objects inside and getting shocked. These outlets are common in homes built after 2008 and are also a great choice for renovation projects.
All wet areas of your home should be protected with a GFCI device. Such locations would include; unfinished basements, outside your home, garages, kitchens, bathrooms/powder rooms, and laundry rooms.
A GFCI outlet, or Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter constantly monitors the electrical current flowing through the "hot" and "neutral" wires. If the amount of current entering the outlet doesn't match the amount leaving, the GFCI senses a "ground fault". This imbalance could indicate that electricity is flowing through a person or other unintended path, potentially causing a shock. The GFCI quickly shuts off the power, typically within 1/40th of a second, before a person can be seriously injured.
